In the morning of Sept. 10th, the International Symposium on the Development of Sino-Tanzania Cooperation and Sino-Africa Relations was held at Confucius Institute.

 

The symposium was co-organized by East China Normal University (ECNU), Confucius Institute at Dar es Salaam University (CI UDSM) and Dar es Salaam University (UDSM). Prof. William Anangisye, Vice Chancellor of UDSM, Prof. Liu Yan and Prof. Aldin Mutembei, the Chinese and Tanzanian Directors of CI UDSM, and representatives from Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress (SCSMPC), Chinese Embassy in Tanzania and East China Normal University (ECNU), and staff and students at UDSM participated in this event.

In the opening ceremony, Prof. William Anangisye, Vice Chancellor of UDSM, expressed a warm welcome to the guests. He said that ECNU has been an old friend of UDSM and close partner in China. He had the pleasure of witnessing the launching of UDSM - ECNU workstation last year, which has built a platform for providing unlimited possibilities to further enhance academic cooperation. It was his fervent hope that this seminar would bring a whole new viewpoint of Sino-Tanzania Cooperation and Sino-Africa Relations.

Ms. YIN Yicui, Chairperson of Standing Committee of Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress (SCSMPC), expressed her gratitude to the University of Dar es Salaam for supporting the Confucius Institute and Chinese teaching. She hoped that this symposium would enhance the mutual understanding and traditional friendship between the Chinese and Tanzanian people in education circles, especially the inter-collegiate exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

 

Mr. GAO Wei, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania

 

Mr. GAO Wei, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Tanzania for 55 years, the Chinese government has provided 1,700 government scholarships for Tanzanian students. China has become a popular destination for Tanzanian youth. At the same time, Tanzania is increasingly attracting Chinese people to travel. He pointed out that it is necessary to encourage the academic community to fully strengthen academic research on the African continent, provide academic support for the development of Africa and  China-Africa relations.

After the opening ceremony, the Chinece and Tanzannian scholars made academic reports on different aspects of Sino-Africa relations.

Prof. Humphrey Moshi, Director of the Center for Chinese Studies at UDSM, made a report The Development of Contemporary China-Africa Relations.

 

Dr. Kwesi D. L. S Prah

 

Dr. Kwesi D. L. S Prah (ECNU) made a report Political Party Development: China and Tanzania People-to-People Relations.

 

Prof. LIU Yan

 

Prof. LIU Yan, the Chinese Director of CI UDSM, made a report Confucius Institute and Sino-Tanzania Cultural Education Cooperation

 

Prof. Muhidin Juma Shangwe

 

Prof. Muhidin Juma Shangwe (UDSM) made a report Modern Sino-Tanzanian Relationship.

 

Prof. LIN Guang

 

Prof. LIN Guang (ECNU) made a report Studies on African Cities by Chinese Scholars.

 

Prof. DU Ying

 

Prof. DU Ying (Anhui Normal University) made a report Anhui Province - Africa’s Economic and Trade Relations, Characteristics and Suggestions for developing Relations with Tanzania.

 

During the Q&A session, the guests and the students of CI UDSM held active discussions on issues such as the bilateral exchanges between China and Africa, Swahili and Chinese and so on.

Finally, Prof. Mu Tao, Director of Institute of World History Studies, ECNU, summarized the symposium. He expressed his gratitude to UDSM staff and all the people who contributed to the successful holding of this international symposium.

 

 

This symposium comprehensively demonstrates the status quo of Sino-Africa relations and cooperation and the potential and expectations of Africa's development. Through this symposium, more Tanzanian students and scholars would understand the contemporary Sino-Tanzania relationship. It would further promote exchanges and cooperation in various fields between China and Tanzania and enhance the friendship between the two countries.

 

A brief meeting

 

Before the symposium, the guests visited Prof. William Anangisye, Vice Chancellor of UDSM, and the two sides held a brief meeting in the Administration Building. Prof. William Anangisy introduced the history and current situation of UDSM to the guests. The meeting was ended by two parties exchanging gifts.
