Kassim Kassim Majaliwa, an alumnus of the University of Dar es Salaam, is the current Prime Minister in the government of the United Republic of Tanzania. He was born on 22 December 1961 in Ruangwa district of Lindi in southern Tanzania. He had his seven years of primary education at Mnacho (1970- 1977), four years of ordinary secondary education at Kigonsera in Ruvuma region (1977-1980 for CSEE) and two years of advanced secondary education at Mtwara (1981-1983, ACSEE). At Mtwara High School, he combined the ACSEE with diploma- level teacher training. He embarked on university studies at the University of Dar es Salaam for a four-year undergraduate training in education from 1994 to 1998, obtaining a Bachelor of Education, specialising in PESC. In 1999, he had a year’s study leave for a postgraduate professional diploma in education in Sweden at Stockholm University.

Within the same year of graduation from UDSM (in 1999), Mr. Majaliwa was appointed by the Tanzania Teachers’ Union (TTU), an umbrella trade union of teachers that had been formed in the country in 1993. He served the Union first as district secretary and then as regional secretary for a continuous period of seven years from 1999 to 2006. In 2006, he was appointed district commissioner for Urambo district in Tabora.

Majaliwa was first elected Member of Parliament for Ruangwa constituency, Lindi, on the Chama Cha Mapinduzi ticket in the 2010 general election. He was thereafter appointed Deputy Minister of State for Regional Administration and Local Government (in the Prime Minister’s Office), for a whole period of five years until 2015. With the successful return to Parliament as MP for Ruangwa and, indeed, with an exemplary record of political and administrative performance in the PMO’s Regional Administration and Local Government division, particularly in relation to problems that had beset educational provision and quality in the decentralised system of schools, it was a pleasant surprise that Mr Majaliwa was appointed Prime Minister in the fifth-phase Government under President Dr. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli. As an educational profession, he has since continued to guide the education sector, along with the added responsibilities of his office.

A man of dedication and principles, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has participated fully in the fight against corruption in the country, not only in the education sector so dear to him but also in other areas of public service, including the energy sector, construction and local government. In many moves, he has even conducted surprise audit trips, not least even across rivers and lakes in dug-out canoes to reach out to remote locations to ensure proper use of development resources and good governance. A picture of such trips should bear testimony. The University of Dar es Salaam, his alma mater, has always wished him well in his dedicated service to his nation.
