Languages and Literature Unit

Language and literature is one of the academic Units in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) which, among others, is responsible for managing and administering the college’s core functions – teaching, research and public services for achieving MUCE’s envisaged mission and vision. The unit is dedicated to being at the forefront of teaching and learning and fostering cutting edge research and discovery. The unit also emphasizes the inseparability of theoretical and empirical work, and the interrelatedness of diachronic and synchronic approaches to the study of language. This Unit is an amalgamation of three (3) Sections, namely: Foreign Languages and Linguistics, Kiswahili and Literature. It also hosts Confucius Centre which is a sub-unit which offers Chinese language courses.

The unit currently offers courses in Linguistics, Literature and Languages both local and international.  Apart from regular classes, the unit also offers languages short courses for the needy people. Short courses which are offered by the unit are:

  1. Kiswahili for foreigners (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels)
  2. English (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels)
  3. French (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels)
  4. Chinese (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels)

These courses, except Kiswahili for foreigners, are taught in evening basis and during students’ long holidays.
