I have received extensive training in biomedical science through a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Chemistry (University of Dar es Salaam, 2004), Master of Science in Molecular Biology (University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) and PhD in Human Genetics (Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences/Kings’ College London, 2016). As an academician I teach, conduct research, consultancy and public service in genetics and molecular biology with a special interest in human genetics/genomics and health. I have conducted genetic research in sickle cell disease for over 10 years. The primary focus has been to identify the genetic determinants of fetal haemoglobin (HbF) and as part of my PhD, we were able to establish a genetic database of more than 1700 individuals with SCD. This data is available for investigation of genetic variants associated with SCD phenotypes. During my PhD training, I have worked closely with the Molecular Hematology department, King’s College London and the medical genetics group at Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI). In 2015, I was a part of the team that established the newborn screening programme for SCD in Tanzania and I have gained experience in setting up a laboratory for screening SCD. From 2016, I started to develop independent research on the genomics of HbF and HbF interventions, pharmacogenomics of Hydroxyurea and genetic and molecular diagnostics. I have taken part in international and regional projects such as SPARCO, ASH-NBS and ICGEB which continues to provided me with an opportunity to extend research outside of Tanzania. I have led and taken part in successful applications in genetics of SCD and other hemoglobinopathies. Through the experience I have gathered in human genetics and my passion to build genetic capacity in Tanzania, in 2017, I co-founded the Tanzania Human Genetics Society (TSHG) and I am the current President.
