It was a great honor for DUCE to host the distinguished invitees, namely, Prof. Katarína Nováková, Dr. Lukas Kurajda and Dr. Pavel Miskarik working in the department of Ethnology and Non-European studies - University of Cyril and Methodius (UCM)-Slovakia. The invitees attended the international workshop on 29th September 2021, which carried a theme: “The Challenges for Social Sciences and Humanities Research in Africa during COVID-19 Pandemic.”

The workshop was indeed an outcome of a partnership between DUCE and UCM. The cooperation between the two institutions has been growing since 2018 when they signed a Memorandum of Understanding through Erasmus programme.

During official opening of the workshop, the College Principal, Prof. Stephen Oswald Maluka said the theme of the workshop is quite relevant to our contemporary times. He further said that the cooperation has positive gesture since DUCE staff have benefited from the exchange programme, and he underscored that the College will safeguard the cooperation to yield positive results.

Appreciation to the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, Dr. Emiliana Mwita and Prof. Katarína Nováková who desired for the continued cooperation even after the untimely demise of Dr. Emmy who initiated the programme.

Through this partnership, two members of academic staff were supported by this exchange in 2019, where Dr. Samwel Mhajida and Prof. Amani Lusekelo went to Slovakia for knowledge sharing. On the part of the students, Mr. Abeid Kerindo and Ms Miriam Ntua participated in the exchange programme for three months. Currently, three Ph.D students, Mr. Stephano Ayo, Ms. Hija Urassa and Mr. Abeid Kerindo are pursuing their studies under the auspices of this partnership.
