On Saturday 23rd October 2021, DUCE under the initiative of the Centre for Social and Political Research (CSPR) and Tanzania Evaluation Association (TanEA) conducted a one day workshop. The theme of the workshop focused on African evaluation insights for democratizing evaluation practices.

African-rooted evaluation is an initiative by the African Evaluation Association (AfrEA). The objectives of the AfrEA are anchored on African Evaluation Standards based on African values and worldviews. AfrEA challenges African scholars and experts to examine, identify and articulate how African culture, history and belief system contribute to evaluation theory, practice and methods.

On her opening speech, the Deputy Principal (Academic), Dr. Christina Raphael was delighted by the CSPR and TanEA initiatives and outlined concrete steps that DUCE has taken to contribute to the growing discipline of the development evaluation. These steps include offering the Master degree in Development Evaluation (MADE), keeping African rooted evaluation as main research agenda for CSPR and supporting collaboration initiatives between CSPR and other evaluation stake holders.

On his plenary presentation, Dr. Almas Mazigo presented evaluative insights found in Swahili proverbs and argued that their philosophical insights and wisdom can provide guidance on conducting and commissioning evaluations, involving people in selecting appropriate indicators, attitude and values for effective and credible evaluation practices.

On the other hand, the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Emiliana Mwita acknowledged the organizing team for good work and informed participants that DUCE has many qualified staff who can work jointly with other institutions and stakeholders in areas of research, consultancy and teaching in African-rooted evaluation.
