UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM
SOCIETY AND RELIGION RESEARCH CENTRE (SORRECE)

Welcome Note

Welcoming Note

Welcome to the Society and Religion Research Centre (SORRECE). SORRECE is affiliated to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, College of Social Science in the University of Dar es Salaam.  It aims to stimulate and coordinate studies on the relationship between religion and society in Tanzania. Guided by the vision and mission, SORRECE conducts training and research which are of benefit to our university, the country, to the regional and international community as a whole. Religion is an important part in development and economic growth. There is a growing demand for understanding about the influence of religion on social cohesion, conflict, development, gender equality, democracy and governance. The Centre has already managed to stimulate debates in this area through international seminars and workshops. Therefore, SORRECE works toward building a peaceful coexistence (tolerance) between believers, sustainable development and upholding of Human Rights principles especially to groups that are already at risk. The Centre intends to be the hub of excellence in dissemination of information regarding society and religious studies. I warmly welcome you to the Center and the University of Dar es Salaam so that together we can stir up the debate and research on this intrinsic area.

Dr. Thomas Ndaluka

Coordinator SORRECE
