UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM
CENTRE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE STUDIES (CCCS)

Forward Note from the Director

In response to the serious threats posed by climate change to the development process and the limitations that Tanzania and the rest of Africa faces in accessing and generating detailed scientific research that is particular to Africa, the University of Dar es Salaam established the Centre for Climate Change Studies (CCCS), a semi-autonomous institution within the University of Dar es Salaam that deals with climate change research, training and education.

The Centre for Climate Change Studies has since celebrated its one year anniversary and I am proud to say that in its one year and eight months in operation, CCCS has built a reputation of having rigorous and innovative research; problem based teaching and training methodology; a high caliber of local and international partners; and a team of highly trained professionals.

It has also implemented a PhD and Master’s program in Climate Change and Sustainable Development, the first of its kind in East Africa; secured project funds from international donors such as the African Academy of Sciences, DFID, IDRC, NORHED and USAID; hosted two international conferences on Urbanization and Development in Africa in the context of Climate Change and the Africa Climate Conference; held two public dialogues on Climate Change Wildlife and Pastoral Communities in North East Tanzania and Urbanization and Development in Africa in the context of Climate Change; and provide capacity building to Geography Teachers from the Kinondoni Municipality and the University of Dar es Salaam faculty.

In the coming year, we hope to get involved in more innovative projects, admit more students, collaborate with more partners and train more stakeholders.
