Chairperson of the University Council
A career legal practitioner, Mwanaidi Sinare Maajar was the High Commissioner of Tanzania in the United Kingdom (2006 - 2010); and Ambassador of Tanzania in Washington, United States (2010 – 2013). Ambassador Maajar is an alumna of the University of Dar es Salaam graduated her first degree in Law (LL.B) in 1977 and master's degree in law (LL.M) in 1982. She began her career as legal advisor with the Bank of Tanzania (1978 - 1983 ) and later on as a Business Development Manager at Coopers & Lybrand (1983 - 1991 ) the predecessor firm of Pricewaterhouse. In 2014 she won the Continental Lifetime Achiever in Business/Professional Service Sector, of the CEO Magazine’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government Awards. She also won the Magazine’s regional and country awards in the same category.
Ambassador Maajar is a Chair and founding partner of REX ATTORNEYS. She is an advocate and a leading corporate legal practitioner specializing in Natural Resources Law as well as the Banking and Finance Practice. She has been serving as member of the University of Dar es Salaam Council since 2021. Mwanaidi Maajar is member of the Board of Directors, TANESCO, member of the University of Dar es Salaam Senate and President of the UDSM Convocation. She is past chair of the Board; Bank of Africa; Tanzania Mozambique Centre for Foreign Relations; Vodacom Tanzania Limited now a public company and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority; and was one of the founders and Chairperson of Tanzania Women Lawyers' Association (TAWLA) (2001 – 2003).
In respect of social responsibility, Mwanaidi Maajar is Chair of the Hassan Maajar Trust (“HMT”, a charity established in July 2011 in memory of her late son, to help improve the learning environment in schools in Tanzania. HMT’s flagship program, A Desk for Every Child, aims to ensure that every child in Tanzania has a desk and has removed over 30,000 children from the floor onto desks over the last four years.
